The new cars are intended to replace older cars, many dating from the 1940s and 1950s and they will be used on the longer distance trips. Amtrak has also spent 446 million dollars on 70 new locomotive engines, but they will be used primarily in the northeast corridor. These capital investments are long overdue and they may help Amtrak's image. They may also go a long way to improving safety on the railroad and to preventing railroad employee and passenger injuries. Older railroad passenger cars were not designed with safety as a foremost consideration. As a result, train derailments are often catastrophic with multiple injuries.
